Background

The Youth Economic Empowerment through Livestock Development (YEELD) Program is a five-year initiative aimed at improving the socio-economic well-being and resilience of financially disadvantaged young people aged 18–35 years in the Teso, Bukedi, and Ankole sub-regions of Uganda through livestock value chains. The program seeks to create 250,000 work opportunities, including 200,000 (80%) young women, 5% persons with disabilities (PWDs), and 3% refugees and displaced persons (RDPs). YEELD is being implemented across 20 districts in the three sub-regions through a consortium coordinated by Ripple Effect, dfcu Foundation, and Multi Community Based Development Initiative (MUCOBADI), in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation.


The Project Driver will support safe and efficient transportation of project staff, visitors, materials, and equipment while ensuring proper maintenance and management of project vehicles in the Teso sub-region.

 

Position Summary

The Project Driver is responsible for providing reliable transportation services for project implementation activities while ensuring safety, compliance, and proper vehicle maintenance. The role also supports logistics coordination and administrative tasks as assigned.

The position requires a disciplined, responsible, and service-oriented individual with strong knowledge of road safety regulations, vehicle maintenance, and regional travel routes within Teso and surrounding areas.

 

Key Roles and Responsibilities

1. Transportation & Field Support

  • Safely transport project staff, consultants, visitors, and partners to field locations and official meetings.
  • Support transportation of project materials, supplies, and equipment to activity sites.
  • Ensure timely pick-up and drop-off of staff and visitors.
  • Maintain accurate vehicle movement logs and travel records.
  • Support field teams during community mobilization, trainings, monitoring visits, and stakeholder engagements.

2. Vehicle Maintenance & Management

  • Ensure the cleanliness and good condition of assigned project vehicle(s).
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections before and after trips.
  • Monitor fuel levels, oil, tires, brakes, battery, and other vehicle systems.
  • Report mechanical faults and maintenance needs promptly.
  • Coordinate routine servicing and repairs in line with organizational procedures.
  • Ensure validity of insurance, licenses, and vehicle documentation.

 

3. Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to all traffic laws, road safety regulations, and organizational transport policies.
  • Ensure safe driving practices at all times, especially during field travel in rural areas.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism while transporting staff and partners.
  • Ensure security and proper handling of project assets and transported items.
  • Support implementation of safeguarding and safety protocols during field activities.

 

4. Logistics & Administrative Support

  • Support logistical arrangements for meetings, workshops, trainings, and field activities.
  • Assist with the delivery and collection of documents, supplies, and official correspondence.
  • Support procurement and office errands as assigned.
  • Maintain fuel consumption and maintenance records for accountability purposes.

 

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) or equivalent qualification.
  • Additional training in defensive driving, mechanics, or logistics is an added advantage.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional driving experience with NGOs, development organizations, or private institutions.
  • Experience driving in rural and field-based project environments is highly desirable.
  • Good knowledge of the Teso region road network and surrounding districts.
  • Experience supporting donor-funded projects is an added advantage.

 

Required Competencies & Skills

  • Valid Ugandan driving permit with classes relevant to project vehicle operation.
  • Clean driving record with strong commitment to road safety.
  • Basic vehicle maintenance and troubleshooting skills.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and travel extensively within the region.
  • High level of integrity, discipline, and professionalism.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and work under pressure.
